The Aggtelek Karst area first became protected in 1978 when
the Aggtelek Protected Landscape Area was declared. The following year
the board of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) declared the
whole territory, almost 20,000 ha, of the protected area as a Biosphere
Reserve, and most of the area under strict protection was designated as
