During the last years many new tourism and sports activities have emerged in the region of the Šumava Biosphere Reserve.
Many of these activities provide opportunities for sustainable tourism development but all of them also have potential negative impacts on the natural environment.
In order to have a better insight into the economic chances and the ecological problem these activities might cause, a SWOT analysis was conducted
regarding selected activities that have been evaluated as possible alternative forms of tourism or that considered in regional development plans.
These were: snowshoeing, dog train, snow mobiles, skialpinism, downhill skiing, snowboarding, skating, telemark/backcountry skiing/orienteering skiing, in-line skating, roller skiing, paragliding, motor hang gliding, nordic walking, scooters (unpowered), downhill carting, rock climbing, MTB downhill race, swimming, yachting and windsurfing, orienteering, cross-country archery, paintball/airsoft and golf. A special study was elaborated on horse-riding in the area.
