The architectural heritage of the Gömör-Torna Karst has the potential to play an important role in the context of sustainable tourism, but in many places modernisation of houses took place without respecting the traditional elements, and many old buildings need to be renovated in order to use them for tourism purposes.
The grant scheme provided small grants to house owners for renovation and use of traditional buildings for tourism related and/or community purposes, using traditional architectural elements. The houses may be used as accommodation, shops, workshops and museums.
Out of 49 applications submitted by local governments, small businesses, accommodation providers, museums and local inhabitants were granted with an average sum of 1000 US$.
The works included the reconstruction or renovation of verandahs, stone and/or wooden fences, establishment and/or renovation of small buildings adequate for community purposes, establishment of small farm buildings for awareness raising purposes, establishment of a traditional stove and a traditional fruit drier.
